Tip #6: Navigate the New Work Rules for Adults Ages 50 to 64
Staying informed about recent legislative updates ensures your benefits remain active without interruption. Federal laws have adjusted work rules for able-bodied adults without dependents, known as ABAWDs.
General work reporting rules now apply to individuals between the ages of 18 and 64. If you fall within this age bracket, you must understand how these mandates operate.
Under these guidelines, non-exempt individuals must complete at least 80 hours per month of qualifying activity. This requirement can be fulfilled through employment, vocational training, or approved community volunteering.
If you do not meet the hourly requirement, benefits are limited to three months in three years. However, numerous common-sense exemptions protect older adults facing health challenges or major life transitions.
You are exempt if you face a chronic medical condition or physical limitation that hinders work. A simple statement from your physician confirms your exemption and protects your monthly grocery funds.
Caring for an incapacitated family member also exempts you from these work reporting rules completely. In addition, adults participating in accredited wellness or rehabilitation programs qualify for full exemption.
Once you celebrate your sixty-fifth birthday, you become completely exempt from all ABAWD work mandates. Adults aged 65 and older never have to document work hours to maintain their benefits.
Communicating openly with your caseworker helps you document any qualifying medical or family exemption quickly. Knowing your legal rights ensures your nutritional support continues uninterrupted throughout the coming year.
Never let confusion over work rules discourage you from applying for the assistance you need. Help is available to guide you through exemptions and keep your benefits secure.
I’m on social security minimum, and I only receive a hundred and thirty dollars a month
What about poor seniors who get$27 a month because they get$1800 a month in retirement and their rent is more than half of that?? Please look out for our seniors also. I appreciate this boost trust me it means the world to me, but I try to help my uncle with what he gets and it breaks my heart, he’s stuck eating from the dollar tree.
I.m with you. I receive 28 a month and stand in the Food Bank Line every week in order to get meat, milk, bread, veggies and whatever else they have. Don.t get me wrong, I appreciate, every thing I can receive because it alleviates having to buy them at the grocery store. I am 80 years old and a widow. I would love someone to explain what the Golden Years,,, really mean, because I have yet to experience them. thank you, Sandra
$25.00 just dont get you nothing when your a diabetic, is in A-fib and other heath issues and am almost 91 years ol, you can barley by a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk with that, that terrible, and am on a fixed income.
I only get $60 and it’s just me, not even close enough for me to eat any meals
Good thing all the non working people and the women that have 1 or more kids get it because they’re lazy asses didn’t want to work !!
I agree with you .. I’m also a senior citizen and only get 53 and I really feel seniors need more
I’m on disability and my foodstamps is only $57 a month and I don’t have enough food to even last for the whole month to eat off of. So I don’t understand why I dont get the same as everyone else in this world. Just because we are on disability please don’t treat us like we doesn’t matter.
I am reading these comments that people have put out there.
I TOTALLY AGREE HOW DO WE SURVIVE ON 23 OR 27 PER MONTH FOOD STAMPS.?????
I know people who get over a 1000.00 per month on food stamps she has over a total of 3000. Balance on the card. How does that happen? I have seen it.
How do we get our Food stamps raised so we have a decent amount of money on it to live.
I get absolutely nothing and have to survive solely on social security. It’s difficult to have to see what I can buy and hope it last the whole month
It shows me and my husband is supposed to get $562 in food stamps but we are not getting that what can we do to find out what the deal is?
Mist are told 24.00 is the max at 1801.00
God Bless you
Fighting kidney failure and diabetes isn’t cheap either and I only get 25.00 a month because I started working 2 days a week so I could make my bills. I dont get it
Tammy I sympathize with you, my rant is well over half of my income plus I pay heat water electric and water on top of my life insurance car insurance and I also have 2 dogs. It’s like people who are below the poverty level are forgotten about.
where can people go to be safe, who can’t be alone all day? Can someone tell me that? I want a pet. My Rocky boy just went to dance in the sky. He lived a long life 23Years. Someone help!!!!
Have you reported ALL of your out-of-pocket medical costs?
They make a HUGE difference in what you’ll receive.
I only get $25.00 that is not enough for me I only can buy milk or bread lunch meat how can someone live off of that my income down and I’m an diabetic
That a chan and I got to go to the food shell every month
we can sure use a little help with grocey
we dont get any food stamps.
i dident know we could
i go to food banks to make ends meet and some senior center give out food try that
Call ur local food stamps office in your area
I find it hard to believe you can say the increases are a generous amount. People on snap will either buy less or buy less expensive food
Like the cola it doesn’t touch what people need to survive.
