Can you prevent wrinkles in your 40s?

Entering the amazing age of 40 doesn’t mean we are getting OLD, it means we are stepping into a great new chapter of our lives. We must enter it with confidence and experience and embrace everything that comes our way. However, it isn’t always sunshine and rainbows because, together with wisdom and confidence, comes an unwanted and despised visitor: wrinkles.

Although aging is an absolutely normal process, several lifestyle choices and external circumstances may speed up the development of wrinkles and fine lines. Ranging from day-to-day habits to lifestyle decisions might make you appear older than you actually are. In today’s article we will list all the causes of them and more importantly, how can you prevent wrinkles in your 40s.

Not getting enough hours of sleep per night

If you want to prevent wrinkles in your 40s, one of the first things you can do is get restful sleep during the night, which is at least 7-8 hours per night. Sleep deprivation has a direct impact on skin health and physical appearance. Your body heals itself as you sleep, generating collagen and other essential proteins that keep your skin soft and supple.

This healing process is slowed down if you don’t get hours of rest per night, which leaves your skin appearing exhausted and wrinkled. Lack of sleep also increases the visibility of fine wrinkles, puffiness, and dark circles.

Poor diet

Your skin’s health and youthfulness are significantly influenced by everything you eat daily. Because processed and unhealthy foods lack the vital nutrients and antioxidants needed for skin cell preservation and repair, eating a diet rich in them can hasten the aging process of the skin and cause wrinkles. Maintaining a nutrient-dense, well-balanced diet will help you maintain the beauty and freshness of your skin.

Lack of a proper skincare routine

Do you want to prevent wrinkles in your 40s? Then have a skincare routine and make sure you’re following it on a daily basis. Studies have shown that your skin is prone to damage and early aging if you neglect to follow a schedule. Skin health and the level of collagen in it may be preserved with a skincare routine that includes hydration, sun protection every time you go out, and mild washing every morning and night before bedtime.

Products containing retinoids, antioxidants, and peptides—anti-aging ingredients—can help promote skin regeneration and minimize the appearance of fine wrinkles. If you want a friendly recommendation regarding creams that contain retinol, my go-to favorite is the one from Neutrogena. Is by far the least expensive compared to the ones from Paula’s Choice or La Roche Posay. This one is available in both variants for daytime and nighttime on Amazon for just $20.13.

I saw visible changes after one month of using it. Just be careful, and if it is a warm summer day outside, also apply SPF with 50+ protection. Apply both for at least 20 minutes before going out of the house.

Genetics

Unfortunately, we cannot fight this one as much as we want to! If, by any chance, one or both of your parents developed wrinkles at an early age, you might be predisposed to the same faith.  According to science, genetics affect skin elasticity, texture, and thickness which leads to the appearance of wrinkles.

Although you cannot modify anything from your genetics you can still be mindful of your skin’s health. The right skin care products and a healthy lifestyle may help you more than you think and even prevent wrinkles in your 40s.

Lack of a workout routine

As you already know, eating the proper foods and moving your body for at least 30–40 minutes per day helps you a lot, especially in keeping your skin young. Maintaining an active lifestyle also improves body circulation which diminishes the chances of developing cardiovascular issues.

Since exercise is also a great way to relieve stress (which is also a huge factor in the appearance of early wrinkles) you can try and engage in simple exercises for beginners and aim for at least 30 minutes a day for 4 or 5 times a week. You don’t know which exercises to do? Just type easy lightweight or beginner full body workout on YouTube and you will for sure find something good for you.

Stress

The body releases more cortisol during times of stress, which causes collagen and elastin to break down and decrease skin firmness and elasticity. Stress can further accelerate the aging process of the skin by having a detrimental influence on food, skincare practices, and sleep quality. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, frequent exercise, and stress management strategies are vital for keeping your skin looking young.

Drinking alcohol

A glass of wine here and there for a special occasion won’t hurt anybody; however, consuming alcohol regularly might affect how your skin looks. It dries out the skin and increases wrinkle vulnerability. It dries out the skin and increases wrinkle vulnerability.

Additionally, it causes blood vessels to dilate and inflammation, giving the skin a flushed, pale appearance. Drinking alcohol causes the body to lose important antioxidants and vitamins that are necessary for healthy skin.

Rather, make sure you drink at least 64 ounces of water every day to stay hydrated. Try adding other fruits to your water, such as lemon slices, cucumber slices, pineapple slices, or mint leaves, if you don’t enjoy the flavor of it alone.

Repeated facial expressions

Have you ever caught yourself making certain facial expressions? Frequent facial expressions, such as squinting, smiling, or frowning all the time, can cause fine lines and wrinkles to appear over time.

Tiny muscular contractions under the skin’s surface are caused by every facial emotion you make and deepen with time as the skin ages and becomes less elastic. If you find yourself squinting a lot, for example, it may be a sign that you need glasses, and it’s recommended to go for a routine check-up with your ophthalmologist.

Using skincare products that aren’t good for your type of skin

It is easy to “eat away” at your skin’s natural oils by using harsh or inappropriate skincare products, which can cause dryness, inflammation, and premature aging of the skin. High alcohol, scent, or strong acid content products might harm the skin’s protective layer, increasing the likelihood of wrinkles and fine lines developing.

Choose moisturizing, mild products that enhance the skin’s natural barrier to keep your skin looking great. In case you are not sure what type of skin you have, make an appointment with a dermatologist. They will give you all the advice you need before starting a skincare routine.

Sun exposure without proper protection

A while ago, the sun used to be our friend, especially during the summer when all we wanted to do was lay in the sun and take frequent baths in the sea. However, because of climate change and such, the sun is now more dangerous than ever. That’s why if you want to protect yourself and your skin and keep wrinkles at bay, you must use protection anytime you go outdoors, even for a quick shopping session.

UV radiation from the sun damages collagen and elastin, the fibers that give the skin its suppleness and structural support. If you’re not wearing enough protection, like sunscreen, even a brief exposure to the sun can be harmful. Make it a practice to protect your skin by wearing protective clothes as white as possible and made of airy fabrics, using broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, and finding shade during the highest temperatures of the day.
