Translation and interpretation

Just like everyone else, people who don’t speak a lot of English might have to talk to the staff at Social Security about benefits or any other concerns they might have. To address this, Social Security offers free interpreter services to anyone who needs or shows a need for any kind of language assistance.

Languages that the agency can translate on a phone call or even an office visit also include Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, Farsi, French, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hmong, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese. If you want to request an interpreter, call Social Security at 800-772-1213. SSA also offers written materials in many languages on its own website.

If you live within 20 miles of any large city there are many food banks that can be found online. As well, if you do not, then many churches give away food once a month to those in need. You can find these online or even using your smartphone, if you have one. Simply enter into the query “local food banks” or “churches giving away food monthly”.
As for utilities, the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities, again online can be found that offer help.
Also, if you are in relatively good health, you can hire yourself out as a companion for other elderly people living alone by placing an ad online or in a local newspaper. Many families are looking for mature trustworthy people that may assist and be a companion to their elderly parent or grandparent that lives alone. You will need some references from friends or past employers or former co-workers that can vouch for your character, however.
