Are you scared of getting old? These are the best things about turning 60!
60 years old sounded so far when you were shining in your 20s, right? It is no surprise that we all used to make jokes about that. Thankfully, the 60 of today are quite different from the 60 we imagined they would be when we were teenagers.
As it happens, there are a ton of amazing benefits to becoming a Big 60. Freedom to dress however you want, the ability to laugh about yourself, and having the house just for yourself are just three of the best things about turning 60!
Let’s see a couple more, starting with my all-time favorite:
Your self-esteem is blooming
We’ve lived long enough to understand and value who we are. We’ve experienced a lot and know how to transform hardships into opportunities for growth. Getting older doesn’t sound that bad, right?
It took some time for me to realize how special I was. All the experience I gained after all these years helped me develop the best version of myself. The years leading up to and including 50 have offered you the opportunity to get to know and appreciate yourself even better.
So, instead of being upset that you’re not so young anymore, cheer up, order a tasty cake, and celebrate all the best things about turning 60! Plus age is just a number, always keep this in mind.
You tend to appreciate your life even more
One of the best things about turning 60 is that we acknowledge that our lives are precious, and now more than ever, we want to do everything we always wanted to. And who’s stopping you? We are aware that life is valuable and temporary. Therefore, we have a stronger desire to live fully in the present and embrace each moment.
We are neither stuck in the past nor preoccupied with the future. We anticipate enjoying each day and are appreciative of it. Take that dance lesson and book a trip to that country you always wanted to see! Your time is now, and it would be a pity not to enjoy it to the fullest.
Stress? You will barely know the meaning of this word
If somebody had told me in my 30s that stress would slowly disappear as soon as we approach 50, I would have been so happy. Honestly! I used to stress about a lot of things back in the day: my kids going to school, paying the mortgage and other debts, contributing to retirement funds, and so on.
As you approach your 60th anniversary, you should be excited about getting off the stressful rollercoaster. It sounds amazing, doesn’t it? And this is the reason behind it.
According to Stony Brook University research with 340,000 US people, “after age 50, life perspectives are more positive while feelings of anxiety and tension decline.” Seniors reportedly have less stress “regardless of certain life circumstances.” See? One more reason to celebrate! Yohoo!
You can stop caring about other’s opinion
This is definitely one of the best things about turning 60! Oh, the liberation! You’ve accepted your gray hair, developed your sense of style, chosen your favorite pieces of clothing regardless of whether they’re in trend or not, and are now allowing yourself to be seen. Isn’t that wonderful?
Discounts and freebies are just around the corner
Having dinner at a nice and fancy restaurant was always something you dream of when you’re young and broke, right? Well, now your dream can come true! Discounts and freebies are one of the best things about turning 60.
If you know where to search, there are many freebies and discounts available to those over 60! As a retiree, we always appreciate a good bargain.
You’re going to be more open about love
This is addressed to those who are single, separated, or widowed. Who says you can fall in love only in your 20s? Once you turn 60, you will be more aware of what you can give and what kind of person you are, and for sure, you will appreciate yourself more than you did when you were younger. And what’s not to like about yourself? So why not let others know and approach you?
Sure, dating won’t be easy, more so because now you can recognize red flags and you know your boundaries, but who knows? Maybe you will find somebody who you can proudly call your better half.
Does midlife scare you? You’re not alone in the boat, and I hope that makes you feel a little bit better. Last year, I read an incredible book that completely transformed my perspective on the world.
If you want (and can), you can buy a copy of How to Be a Boss at Ageing: Real advice on how to navigate and embrace midlife by clicking here. I read it on Kindle, but it’s also available in paperback for just $3.69.
Beauty comes from the inside
You can think what you want, but nobody will change my opinion on this matter: beauty comes from the inside too, especially after we age. And probably this is one of the best things about turning 60.
Your face isn’t as smooth as it was a decade ago, but you come to embrace your wrinkles, and even if they can’t be removed, a diet based on healthy foods can help keep it nourished and glowing.
Even if it’s difficult to admit you’re older, you may still smile when you look in the mirror. And that’s fantastic! It shows that you’ve come to a place in your life where you embrace your flaws and all of who you are. You have every reason in the world to smile, so keep doing so!
You get the time to see your grandchildren grow
I couldn’t end the list of all the best things about turning 60 without mentioning grandchildren. If you are blessed to have grandkids running in your backyard appreciate that as much as possible! Be happy, be present, and smile along with them.
When grandchildren are born, a completely new universe also does. A new level of happiness grows out of seeing the world through their eyes, and trust me when I say it’s full of wonders!
Now is the perfect moment to relive your childhood if you’ve been waiting for a sign to do so. Not many elderly people get to watch their grandchildren grow up so cherish every single moment.
You get more attractive!
This is, for sure, one of the best things about turning 60! You’re more attractive, sassy, and confident than ever! And that turns some heads on the street, trust me.
If you see something on the list that needs improvement, don’t be discouraged; you may still attempt to achieve it. You are at the height of your ability and knowledge.
Embrace every year and anniversary, and be grateful you are healthy enough to enjoy all the things that wait for you!
