Unleash the Fun: Games & Activities for Grandparents and Kids

activities for grandparents and kids

These are the most enjoyable activities for grandparents and kids:

Being a grandparent is definitely a new way to relive your childhood through your grandkids. Sounds fun, right? Making new memories, playing new games, and having fun with the juniors can be a great way to spend your retirement.

In the era of technology, when every gadget is a distraction, you try to introduce them to games and activities that don’t imply staring at a display. Your grandchildren may also learn important life skills such as taking turns, communicating, and strategizing through a simple and fun game.

These interactive exercises could become cherished family traditions, creating lasting memories passed down through generations on special occasions and vacations. Without further ado, here are just a couple of activities for grandparents and kids:

Do puzzles

Doing a puzzle is one of the best activities for grandparents and kids, especially if you have a super energetic kid and you feel like you can’t keep up with them. As the grandchildren and grandparents work together to place all the puzzle pieces in their proper places, solving puzzles will keep their minds active and peaceful.

Once you’ve completed the puzzle, take some pictures of the results. You will be surprised at how cute those smiling faces will look in the pictures. It will be such a cool memory!

Play board games

I am so excited and looking forward to playing Monopoly with my grandkids next weekend that I can’t hold it together. I hope you like that too, because, in my opinion, this is among the funniest activities for grandparents and kids and a way to teach them the importance of money, how to invest, and how to spend it wisely.

Monopoly also “triggers” that competitive side of people, so don’t be surprised if the juniors try to make you lose. After all, it is supposed to be fun, so let them win. You’ll see how they brag about it later on with the parents (wink-wink).

Crossword puzzles

Now, that’s something that both of you will enjoy doing. But this is an activity that you can do with older kids who already know a couple of words, and it is a great opportunity for them to learn some new words.

Playing a game like Scrabble, for example, will improve their focus, language, and spelling. Is the junior trying to learn a foreign language you also know? That’s great because you can try to play Scrabble in that language and see how much you remember it. Trust me, you can’t fail with this game on a Sunday afternoon.

Play cards

I don’t know about you, but I and my family love Uno, and we tried to get the juniors into playing it as well. And guess what? We did it! However, if you don’t like Uno, you can try Miles Bornes, Crazy Eights, Old Maid, Slapjack, War, or Go Fish. All of them are so fun, and it is a great way for the kids to learn from their grandparents.

Build Legos

Woohoo, did somebody say Lego? Count me in! And no doubt the juniors as well. Out of all the activities for grandparents and kids, building something out of Lego pieces is one of my favorites. You don’t need to be an architect to do it; just grab some blocks and start building something with them.

Let your imagination run free and see which one can build the tallest tower or the best house, and the winner will receive three scoops of their favorite ice cream!

Is the junior new to the Lego world? No worries, you can find plenty of beginner sets on Amazon. But I’ve chosen the easiest and cutest one for you! Classic Creative Blue Bricks 11006 Kids’ Building Toy Starter Set with Blue Bricks to Inspire Imaginative Play costs just $10.48. With this set, you can construct and reconstruct three models as depicted on the box. Unlock the fun and order it today!

Gardening

Besides games and other activities suitable for indoors, you and your grandkids can also have fun in nature, right in your garden. Look for insects and earthworms, sow seeds, and take care of the garden’s blossoms.

You don’t have a backyard? No worries! You can have fun with nature by creating terrariums, a window box, or planting your favorite flower, herb, or veggie in a pot that you both paint. Then take advantage of decorating the space with them and display them somewhere every guest can see them!

Try and do a family recipe

This is going to be super fun for older kids, who are also allowed in the kitchen while adults are cooking. So, start by telling them the story of the recipe itself, which will make them curious about it. Make sure before you start to have on hand every single ingredient you need to make the recipe.

Let the kids do something too, like add the flour while following your directions, decorate the cake by the end, or do anything else that’s simple but makes them feel useful too. In the end, enjoy sharing the meal as a family, and don’t forget to snap some photos along the way.

Dress up

Besides games and other activities, dressing up can be a lot of fun too! Do you still have some of your old jewelry or that prom dress from your daughter? Why not let the granddaughter try it out?  Is Halloween approaching? Then you can sew some clothes together and go for matching outfits. Is your grandson interested in looking fancy? Let him try out his grandfather’s ties or shoes.

Read together

Nothing compares to reading to yourself when you’re seated with your grandparents! Just when you thought Grandma and Grandpa couldn’t get much more heroic than they already are. Ask your children to choose two books they want to read.

Sew or knit a blanket, or stuffed animal

There is still value in the arts of knitting, sewing, and crocheting, so why not turn it into a fun activity with your juniors? Start with knitting blankets, scarves, and other accessories for their beloved baby dolls and toys. Let them help you, even if they don’t know what they’re doing! I am sure you will have a lot of fun together.

Paint rocks

Who’s up for some rock painting? No matter the shape of the rock, this mini-art project can turn out to be very nice. If you can’t find rocks near you, then try at a hardware store. Paint motivational phrases and drawings on them, then place them in discrete locations so that people can discover them and be inspired to be nice and happy.

Learn together how to play a musical instrument

Do you know how to play a musical instrument, or have you always wanted to learn how to? Then now it’s the moment. Convince your grandkids that music has a great contribution to our lives, and maybe they’ll find it interesting and challenging to learn how to play an instrument.

Harmonica, guitar, piano, and violin are among the most popular and easiest instruments to play. What would you choose?
