The Worst 5 States for Seniors to Be Healthy

Nevada

This is the worst state to live in if you want to be a healthy senior who lives a nice and long life. There is a low number of physicians per capita, ranking 45th nationally. There are simply not enough professionals, and this leads to disastrous consequences.

Almost 48% of Medicare beneficiaries aged 65–74 who live in Nevada suffer from three or more chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis. Managing multiple conditions is hard, and it’s worse when the healthcare system isn’t helping, as is the case here.

Then we need to mention that staying healthy is not a priority for many residents because they are actively facing economic instability. The high out-of-pocket costs make many individuals postpone visiting the doctor, and over time this results in conditions that greatly affect their lives. Also, the more you wait, the more expensive the treatment becomes.

Hopefully, the state has recognized these challenges, and state officials have initiated measures to improve the situation. In April 2024, Governor Joe Lombardo decided to sign an executive order directing the Patient Protection Commission to start the development of a recommendation that is supposed to increase access to quality healthcare.

I lived in Taos, New Mexico for twenty years until I moved in 2020 to be closer to my son. I am now in my late eighties. The medical care in Taos, Espanola, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque was superior to anywhere else I have lived

Look closely… there are numbers 1 through 5, in brownish ovals. Click on those numbers and it takes you page by page through the list of states.

The location within your state might allow a neighboring state to affect your healthcare.

For example, where I am in eastern California the nearest hospital with necessary specialists and a bed available might be in Nevada. In my remote location, even though it’s 200 miles away, it’s common for patients to be flown to Reno.

Even if we’re sent to a California hospital it’s at 150 miles away.
